Before the match, the home side were on a five-game winning run, but the Greens put in a great performance to halt it, and take all three points back to Mossie Park in this Boxing Day clash. Manager Andrew Westwell named the same squad that were defeated by Northwich Victoria 4 days ago, as the home side won the toss and kicked off. The first noteworthy chance came in the opening minute, as a deep cross from Sumner was cleared to Salthurst, but led to him putting the finish over the bar. Charnock won the first corner as Bibby’s cross was headed away by Reader, and Noblet’s set piece was cleared by Bamba. Charnock didn’t have long to wait to go ahead though. On 12 minutes, Carl GRIMSHAW picked up a deep ball from Walker on the left, and from 10 yards out, finishing past Fletcher in the Gate goal. Adam Sumner then played a free kick over everyone in the goal mouth for the home side as they tried to get on level terms. Ryan Schofield was on hand to clear the ball away from in front of Boyd as the Gate man looked to get on the end of a cross. Down the other end, a nod down by Carsley found Noblet, but his 30 yard effort was tame and found the hands of Fletcher. Grimshaw then volleyed over after neat work by Noblet. Goalscorer Grimshaw was then shown a yellow card for retaliation after a skirmish involving Sumner and Davison. Andy Westwell was forced into a change before the break; earlier Schofield picked up a knock and he was replaced by Oliver Turner.
No changes were made at the start of the second half, and 30 seconds in, Charnock doubled their lead. Who else but Carl GRIMSHAW finishing off a move started by Mark Woods with a ball from the left, as the Charnock number 9 turned on the edge of the box to fire past a stranded Fletcher. One would expect Squires Gate to rally back with a goal, but it didn’t arrive. Staunton-Turner fired over from distance, as a couple of corners were easily dealt with by the Charnock defence. Matt Davison dragged a shot wide down the other end after Noblet played him through after beating two men. Midway through the second half, Grimshaw headed a high ball to the back post, but no-one in green could turn it home. Noblet fired across goal but only found the terracing, and Grimshaw saw an effort go over the bar as the fog increased in thickness. With three minutes of normal time remaining, the game was sealed and Carl GRIMSHAW claimed a deserved hat-trick. He turned his marker in the area and made no mistake beating Fletcher for the third time of the afternoon.
The Greens are next in action at home to Abbey Hey on Saturday 5th January, kick-off 3.00pm. We would like to wish all followers of Charnock Richard FC a very happy New Year.
